Winter Watch

Snowstorms can cause plenty of traffic headaches, but the Winterport Water District wants people to be aware of another problem that may develop. When you're working with a shovel or a plow, please pay attention to where you're putting your snow. So many times these piles can end up in front of or on top of a fire hydrant making it difficult or near impossible for firefighters to find.

The Winterport Water District is encouraging residents to "Adopt-A-Hydrant" near their home. Residents who adopt fire hydrants will help the Water District by keeping them clear of snow in the winter.

Those people or businesses who adopt a fire hydrant are asked to keep the hydrant clear of ice and snow, and shovel a three-foot radius out around it. When shoveling snow be aware of vehicle traffic. Do not stand in the street and be careful not to slip and fall out into the roadway.

Keeping fire hydrants free of snow and ice substantially reduces the amount of time it takes for firefighters to take action when responding to a fire call.

summertime

During the summer months you can help keep hydrants free of overgrowth such as grass and weeds.

You can also help the Winterport Water District by reporting any leaking or damaged hydrants by calling 207-223-5028. Do not attempt to paint hydrants or alter or try to repair them o your own.
